Conflict Management - 1095 Words
Conflict Management can often be the toughest task for a leader to handle. It involves dealing with inter-personal and intra-personal conflict. As a team leader of a technical event called Pulseââ¬â¢09 at my university, I had to deal with conflicts on a regular basis. Conflicts usually arise either due to lack of effective communication, different ideologies, lack of resources or due to task interdependence [3]. It was by far my most life changing experience as it taught me the reason behind conflicts and the way to resolve them. In this paper, I will be talking about the way I dealt with conflicts and managed them, the impact they had on the team performance and what I could do to improve my leadership by contrasting my experience to theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Members began to work more for the success of their groups and indirectly contributed to the success of Pulseââ¬â¢09. Communication was not an issue anymore and meetings were held regularly. There were times when the groups met more than once during the week to discuss individual progress. Team meetings saw less of conflicts and more of a productive discussion that was aimed at the success of the event. Incorporating a reward system, I guess was the key that created a sense of healthy competition amongst the individual groups and made the members strive towards the goal. As the event came closer, the more positive I felt about the success of Pulseââ¬â¢09. The last meetings focused on bringing together the work done by individual groups. The norms remained the same and thus, the productivity of the team as a whole too didnââ¬â¢t seem to lessen. The event was a huge success and was listed amongst the top 10 technical festivals to attend in the ââ¬ËTimes of Indiaââ¬â¢ newspaper. When I think back now, I feel I could have done a better job in showcasing my leadership skills. Especially after attending the leadership class, I could have done a lot differently. It was my first time as a leader and no doubt I had done a good job, but with experience I definitely feel that I could have executed a better leadership style at the event. Our government had put a stop to all communication, trade, travel, and influence from some countries overseas. Not only was our government no longer involved with the majority of other countries our citizens also could not travel to these places nor buy from them and all who were believed to be involved in secret affiliation would be brought to court. Policy with other countries prior to the events was different when looking at the topic of involvement of the U.S. and others. Before 9/11, the Bush administration had focused its foreign policy attention on China and Russia; on determining whether a Middle East peace settlement was in the cards; on building a ballistic missile defense system; and on contemplating how to deal with rogue states such as Iran, Iraq, Libya, and North Korea. At many meetings of the National Security Council, officials debated the pros and cons of a new sanctions regime against Saddam Hussein s dictatorial government in Baghdad; they also discussed what would be done if U.S. planes enforcing the no-fly

Personal Narrative A Memory Essay Example For Students
Personal Narrative A Memory Essay ââ¬Å"What is that sound? , sound like a train in movement. And why are all those people screaming? Are they afraid, or having fun? These were my thoughts the very first time I went to Six Flags Mexico, and its also one of the oldest memories I have. My parents took me there for the first time when I was almost two years old. The only thing I remember is Bugs Bunny taking a peek inside my stroller and my dad telling me to say hi. I started remembering this when I was in my early teenage years, I guess that watching Looney Tunes cartoons was what triggered my memory. Like this memory, I have many more, some are clearer than others and even ââ¬Å"longerâ⬠than this one. Any sense can trigger a memory, even smelling certain scents take me back to a specific day or event. For example, whenever thereââ¬â¢s a strong scent of something natural, like a plant, I remember my elementary biology teacher. She used to wear a perfume that smelled like nature in a bottle. But whenever I smell paella, it brings back both funny and bad memories. My family had gone to Costco to buy a paella for a Saturday get-together and when my mom heated it in the oven, it made the entire house stink, it was a bad batch or something, but I remember we had to get out of the house for hours until the smell had gone down. As for hearing, I guess that music is what has the most impact for me and helps me remember, or sounds like crickets remind me of late nights at the beach in Cancun. Taste is probably the funnest one, because it catches you off guard. Even though you may think you know exactly how something tastes, it can go a lot differently. For me, whenever I have a hot white chocolate with mint at Starbucks I remember several Christmas dinners. When I touch one of my favorite sweatshirts, I always remember how my mom stuck it in the dryer and it became all starchy. When I see a girl with a peach blouse or accessory I immediately think of my mom and how that is her favorite color. I also remember one of my best friends when I see anything that has a kind of mint shade and how we spent an entire day searching for a tie that would match his dateââ¬â¢s dress. But then there are also times when I try to remember things and I canââ¬â¢t. When that happens, I can literally only concentrate in remembering, if I canââ¬â¢t remember, I simply canââ¬â¢t focus on anything else and I get stressed out. For example, on Monday I was about to leave my house when I realized I had lost my car keys. I was obviously stressing out, even though I was going to get to school early. I started looking for them all over the place until I decided to go back and trace my steps from the day before. Of course it didnââ¬â¢t work the first time, it worked until the third time because every time I started, I started from inside the house. And believe it or not, I had actually left my keys on the doorknob. I know, I was in a hurry and didnââ¬â¢t notice, Iââ¬â¢m just thankful no one else noticed. One thing I definitely like about memory is that you not only are able to remember what happened but also you can remember how you felt. An example of this is one memory about my mission that always makes laugh like crazy. My companion was from another country, we were serving in Mexico. That day the family that invited us to dinner were going to make tacos. My companion was so excited that he ate almost 12 tacos with several spoons of spicy salsa. That was a big mistake because 2 hours later, we were walking back to home, and my companion started having a stomachache. We did not make it to the house in time for him to go to the restroom, so, he crapped his pants. .uc9d1a7cb318da702c501fafe3851fe9f , .uc9d1a7cb318da702c501fafe3851fe9f .postImageUrl , .uc9d1a7cb318da702c501fafe3851fe9f .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uc9d1a7cb318da702c501fafe3851fe9f , .uc9d1a7cb318da702c501fafe3851fe9f:hover , .uc9d1a7cb318da702c501fafe3851fe9f:visited , .uc9d1a7cb318da702c501fafe3851fe9f:active { border:0!important; } .uc9d1a7cb318da702c501fafe3851fe9f .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uc9d1a7cb318da702c501fafe3851fe9f { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uc9d1a7cb318da702c501fafe3851fe9f:active , .uc9d1a7cb318da702c501fafe3851fe9f:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uc9d1a7cb318da702c501fafe3851fe9f .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uc9d1a7cb318da702c501fafe3851fe9f .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uc9d1a7cb318da702c501fafe3851fe9f .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uc9d1a7cb318da702c501fafe3851fe9f .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uc9d1a7cb318da702c501fafe3851fe9f:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uc9d1a7cb318da702c501fafe3851fe9f .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uc9d1a7cb318da702c501fafe3851fe9f .uc9d1a7cb318da702c501fafe3851fe9f-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uc9d1a7cb318da702c501fafe3851fe9f:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Alcohol Abuse EssayEvery time I remember that day I start laughing like a kid, because I can feel everything like it was yesterday. The same happen with bad and sad memories. I can feel the same pain I felt a year ago when one of my friends died in a motorcycle accident or when my sister told me she was going to divorce because her husband told her he does not want to be with her anymore without reasons. That kind of bad and sad memories come to my mind every time I have problems in my life. I think memories can help us to learn how to avoid bad experiences. If you are going to fall out in the same mistakes you made before, it would be really helpful to remember what do you feel when you made the same mistake in the past, that would help you to take the decision of do not do it again. Memory is and always will be a blessing, we shouldnââ¬â¢t take it for granted, especially knowing that not all people can enjoy it. I would recomend to write down all your memories, is a cool idea to do not let memories die. Be aware that exercising the mind is just as important as exercising the body.

Profile of World War II Colonel General Ludwig Beck
Profile of World War II Colonel General Ludwig Beck Early Career Born at Biebrich, Germany, Ludwig Beck received a traditional education before entering the German Army in 1898 as a cadet. Rising through the ranks, Beck was recognized as a gifted officer and was tapped for staff service. With the outbreak of World War I, he was assigned to the Western Front where he spent the conflict as a staff officer. With the German defeat in 1918, Beck was retained in the small postwar Reichswehr. Continuing to advance, he later received command of the 5th Artillery Regiment. Becks Rise to Prominence In 1930, while in this assignment, Beck came to the defense of three of his officers who were charged with distributing Nazi propaganda on post. As membership in political parties was forbidden by Reichswehr regulations, the three men faced a court-martial. Angered, Beck passionately spoke on behalf of his men arguing that the Nazis were a force for good in Germany and that officers should be able to join the party. In the course of the trials, Beck met and impressed Adolf Hitler. Over the next two years, he worked to write a new operations manual for the Reichswehr entitled Truppenfà ¼hrung. The work earned Beck a great deal of respect and he was given command of the 1st Cavalry Division in 1932 along with a promotion to lieutenant general. Eager to see German prestige and power returned to prewar levels, Beck celebrated the Nazi ascent to power in 1933 stating, I have wished for years for the political revolution, and now my wishes have come true. It is the first ray of hope since 1918. With Hitler in power, Beck was elevated to lead the Truppenamt (Troop Office) on October 1, 1933. Beck as Chief of Staff As the Treaty of Versailles prohibited the Reichswehr from having a General Staff, this office served as a shadow organization that fulfilled a similar function. In this role, Beck worked to rebuild the German military and pushed to develop new armored forces. As German rearmament moved forward, he was officially titled Chief of the General Staff in 1935. Working an average of ten hours a day, Beck was known as an intelligent officer, but one that often became obsessed by administrative details. A political player, he worked to expand his posts power and sought the ability to directly advise the Reich leadership. Though he believed that Germany should fight a major war or series of war to restore its place as a power in Europe, he felt that these should not occur until the military was fully prepared. Despite this, he strongly backed Hitlers move to reoccupy the Rhineland in 1936. As the 1930s progressed, Beck became increasingly concerned that Hitler would force a conflict before the military was ready. As a result, he initially refused to write plans for the invasion of Austria in May 1937 as he felt it would provoke a war with Britain and France. Falling Out with Hitler When the Anschluss failed to cause international protest in March 1938, he quickly developed the needed plans which were dubbed Case Otto. Though Beck foresaw a conflict to eliminate Czechoslovakia and officially advocated for action in the fall of 1937, he retained worries that Germany was not prepared for a major European war. Not believing Germany could win such a contest prior to 1940, he openly began advocating against a war with Czechoslovakia in May 1938. As the armys senior general, he challenged Hitlers belief that France and Britain would allow Germany a free hand. The relationship between Beck and Hitler rapidly began to deteriorate aided by the latters preference for the Nazi SS over the Wehrmacht. While Beck lobbied against what he believed would be a premature war, Hitler chastised him stating that he was one of the officers still imprisoned in the idea of the hundred-thousand-man army imposed by the Treaty of Versailles. Through the summer Beck continued to work to prevent a conflict while also attempting to reorganize the command structure as he felt it was Hitlers advisors that were pushing for war. In an effort to increase pressure on the Nazi regime, Beck attempted to organize a mass resignation of senior Wehrmacht officers and issued instructions on July 29 that as well as preparing for foreign wars the army should be ready for for an internal conflict which need only take place in Berlin. In early August, Beck suggested that several Nazi officials should be removed from power. On the 10th, his arguments against war were relentlessly attacked by Hitler at a meeting of senior generals. Unwilling to continue, Beck, now a colonel general, resigned on August 17. Beck Bringing Down Hitler In exchange for resigning quietly, Hitler had promised Beck a field command but instead had him transferred to the retired list. Working with other anti-war and anti-Hitler officials, such as Carl Goerdeler, Beck and several others began planning to remove Hitler from power. Though they informed the British Foreign Office of their intentions, they were unable to prevent the signing of the Munich Agreement in late September. With the beginning of World War II in September 1939, Beck became a key player in various plots to remove the Nazi regime. From the fall of 1939 through 1941, Beck worked with other anti-Nazi officials such as Goerdeler, Dr. Hjalmar Schacht, and Ulrich von Hassell in planning a coup to remove Hitler and make peace with Britain and France. In these scenarios, Beck would be the leader of the new German government. As these plans evolved, Beck was involved in two aborted attempts to kill Hitler with bombs in 1943. The following year, he became a key player, along with Goerdeler and Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, in what became known as the July 20 Plot. This plan called for Stauffenberg to kill Hitler with a bomb at the Wolfs Lair headquarters near Rastenburg. Once Hitler was dead, the conspirators would use the German reserve forces to take control of the country and would form a new provisional government with Beck at its head. On July 20, Stauffenberg detonated the bomb but failed to kill Hitler. With the plots failure, Beck was arrested by General Friedrich Fromm. Exposed and with no hope of escape, Beck elected to commit suicide later that day rather than face trial. Using a pistol, Beck fired but only managed to critically injure himself. As a result, a sergeant was forced to finish the job by shooting Beck in the back of the neck. English as a Global Language
English as a Global Language In Shakespeares time, the number of English speakers in the world is thought to have been between five and seven million. According to linguist David Crystal, Between the end of the reign of Elizabeth I (1603) and the beginning of the reign of Elizabeth II (1952), this figure increased almost fiftyfold, to around 250 million (The Cambridge Encyclopedia of the English Language, 2003). Its a common language used in international business, which makes it a popular second language for many. How Many Languages Are There? There are roughly 6,500 languages spoken in the world today. About 2,000 of them have fewer than 1,000 speakers. While the British empire did help spread the language globally its only the third most commonly spoken language in the world. Mandarin and Spanish are the two most commonly spoken languages on Earth.à From How Many Other Languages Has English Borrowed Words? English is jokingly referred to as a language thief because of it has incorporated words from over 350 other languages into it. The majority of these borrowed words are latin or from one of the Romance languages. How Many People in the World Today Speak English? Roughly 500 million people in the world are native English speakers. Another 510 million people speak English as a second language, which means that there are more people who speak English along with their native language than there are native English speakers. In How Many Countries Is English Taught as a Foreign Language? English is taught as a foreign language in over 100 countries. Its considered the language of business which makes it a popular choice for a second language. English language teachers are often paid very well in countries like China and Dubai. What Is the Most Widely Used English Word? The form OK or okay is probably the most intensively and widely used (and borrowed) word in the history of the language. Its many would-be etymologists have traced it variously to Cockney, French, Finnish, German, Greek, Norwegian, Scots, several African languages, and the Native American language Choctaw, as well as a number of personal names. All are imaginative feats without documentary support. (Tom McArthur, The Oxford Guide to World English. Oxford University Press, 2002) How Many Countries in the World Have English as Their First Language? This is a complicated question, as the definition of first language differs from place to place, according to each countryââ¬â¢s history and local circumstances. The following facts illustrate the complexities: Australia, Botswana, the Commonwealth Caribbean nations, Gambia, Ghana, Guyana, Ireland, Namibia, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States have English as either a de facto or statutory official language. In Cameroon and Canada, English shares this status with French; and in the Nigerian states, English and the main local language are official. In Fiji, English is the official language with Fijian; in Lesotho with Sesotho; in Pakistan with Urdu; in the Philippines with Filipino; and in Swaziland with Siswati. In India, English is an associate official language (after Hindi), and in Singapore English is one of four statutory official languages. In South Africa, English [is] the main national language- but just one of eleven official languages. In all, English has official or special status in at least 75 countries (with a combined population of two billion people). It is estimated that one out of four people worldwide speak English with some degree of competence. (Penny Silva, Global English. AskOxford.com, 2009)

Impact of NGOs on Chinas Labour Rights CSR Component Essay
Impact of NGOs on Chinas Labour Rights CSR Component - Essay Example The role of NGOs is growing more important in China given the lack of political independence, as well as freedom of association, for work councils and trade unions on the factory floor. This vacuum is filled partially by labour support and labour rights NGOs, which bargain for labour rights and offer support to work for councils at factories and other workplaces. These organizations have more room to manoeuvre since they can bypass political aspects because of their business model, although this can also lead to additional dependencies that hamper their strategies for collective action focused labour rights (Lin, 2010). NGOs, thus, face the delicate task of balancing dependencies between businesses and states and expanding on what current labour laws, both national and international, provide. Their effectiveness against this backdrop will be discussed with regards to labour rights within their larger CSR monitoring mandate. NGOs working in the labour rights and labour support sector in China have several government-recognized frameworks to ensure adherence to CSR, particularly labour rights. One of this is the 2008 Labour Law that was passed in mid-2007 and implemented the next year. In passing the new labour law, the Chinese legislature strengthened worker protection and made a real attempt at adhering to internationally recognized labour regulations (Zheng, 2009). This law required that employees in all Chinese companies give their workers a written contract and restricted use of casual labourers, while also making it more difficult to lay off workers. The law also softened its stance on foreign companies that were a threat to those in China, as well as enhanced the role of the state-owned union in collective bargaining. The law also requires that all employers give equal treatment to immigrant and local employees. In addition, the law also requires that the written contracts offered by employers to w orkers meet minimum safety and wage regulations (See, 2009). For NGOs in China, most of which are funded by foreign labour rights organizations, this moves the country towards a European-style regime of labour regulations.

History of Eastern Philosophy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
History of Eastern Philosophy - Essay Example They believe that religion and philosophy are mutually exclusive and drastically different (Carr, pp. 241-243). They have various arguments in this regard. First, the most important difference between these two is the fact that philosophy aims at uncovering the truth about the universe through a systematic and logical process of rational inquiry and even if any knowledge obtained from some other source or object cannot meet the rational requirements would be discarded. On the other hand, religion promotes rationality to the extent to which it does not collide or negate the existence of a supernatural force or its Holy books. Furthermore, the ââ¬Å"knowledgeâ⬠gained through the holy books or prophets, is also a consideration as the ultimate truth without testing it through any rational or logical means. Second, religion is not complete in the absence of rituals (Ram-Prasad, pp. 85-89). Every religion requires its followers to follow some practices, norms, ceremonies and others, which complete his followership. However, a philosopher can endorse philosophy without having to practice any ceremonies. Third, a closer look would reveal that philosophy is a thinking, which has a beginning but no end. Despite the fact that the whole premise has its basis on awareness the problem, that outweighs the search of a final answer (Bretzke, pp. 141-145). In fact, every answer in philosophy gives rise to new problems and questions. On the other hand, religion takes an approach, which aims at finding a specific answer that puts a full stop to all the discussion. This paper is an attempt to look at the various eastern philosophies such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism. The paper will explore these religions and the link with the philosophies, which they have founded over the period. Discussion Taoism, also known as ââ¬Å"Daoism, is an eastern religion and philosophyâ⬠(Bretzke, pp. 141-145), which is more than two millenniums old. Statistics reveal tha t there are more than 225 million followers of this religion; however, the numbers is doubtful since many of its followers accept it as a philosophy and associate himself or herself with Confucianism or Buddhism as well at the same time. The founder of this school of thought, Loa Tzu lived a few years before Confucius (Bretzke, pp. 141-145). A comparison of Confucianism and Taoism would reveal that Confucius has actually build upon many of the teachings of Lao Tzu has many of his teachings are an evolved form of Taoists ideals. Loa Tzu believed that the best way of achieving happiness is to stop complaining about the way thing are going, sit back and let nature take care of things (Bretzke, pp. 141-145). His way of doing things is not by doing anything. He believed that everything in the nature has a life and shared a force in the total universal force. Therefore, humans should align their forces and power with that of the universe to achieve satisfaction. Taoism believes that every person has a Yin (the dark side) and Yang (the light side). The best way is to keep them balanced in order to lead the best life. Furthermore, Taoism also appears to be in line with anarchism which believes that there should be no rules or regulations formed by the government. Some Taoists have gone to say that there should be no governments at all since it is against the principle of ââ¬Å"doing by doing nothingâ⬠(Leaman, p. 74-76). People should have the right to decide everything for themselves.

Loneliness in Of Mice and Men Essay Example for Free
Loneliness in Of Mice and Men Essay Explore the issues connected with loneliness in John Steinbecks Of Mice and Men. Loneliness is examined carefully in Of Mice and Men. In the world of itinerant ranch-hands, loneliness is an inescapable part of life and Steinbeck records this through the plot and characters in his novel. Being lonely is the lack of an emotional, mutual bond, which leads the characters to lose a sense of self-worth and dignity. This essay explores what Steinbeck discusses about loneliness in Of Mice and Men and how he uses the characters of Candy, Crooks, George, Lennie and Curleys wife to express these views. George and Lennie are the most interesting starting point for such an exploration since they are the only two characters in the novel who are defined by their companionship rather than loneliness. George proclaims proudly to Lennie in the early pages of the novel, that itinerant ranch-hands, typical of the economic Depression in the USA in the 1930s, are the loneliest guys in the world but with us [them] it aint like that. Both George and Lennie know that their friendship gives them a future and gives their life purpose and significance. They want to own a farm where they can live off the fatta the lan' and rear animals; where their feeling of self-worth will not stem from gambling and prostitutes, but from their camaraderie-their importance to each other. On the other hand, other wandering workers got no family and they dont belong no place. George and Lennie know that their companionship sets them apart-it makes them dignified enough to have a dream and think about putting down roots, a dream that most ranch-hands would have had at the time, but would never achieve. Other ranch-hands remained as islands, their lives cut off from anybody elses. The fact that the bond between George and Lennie would have been rare-it is the only instance of true friendship between men in the novel-shows that at the time of the Great Depression, every man was for himself. Indeed, a few characters are suspicious of their friendship, thinking it financially exploitative: You takin his pay away from him? Well, I never seen a guy take so much trouble for another guy. The only reason their friendship exists is because Lennie is so simple; his vulnerability and dependence on George make him loyal and trustworthy, unlike any other ranch-hand. Although George says, When I think of the swell time I could have without you, I go nuts, he knows that Lennies presence makes him feel more important and confident than an average itinerant worker like him would normally-being in charge with Lennie makes him feel in charge of his life. Tragically, however, by the end of the novel this is what George becomes-an average itinerant worker; he has to kill Lennie and after losing the only emotional human connection he had, Georges dream and dignity are both destroyed: He usta like to hear about it so much I got to thinking maybe we would [be able to have the farm.] The fact remains that such an honest friendship has a flawed foundation-Lennies mental debility, although making a friendship possible, also makes him too vulnerable to make prudent decisions. Loneliness is thus inevitable for George and all his fellow wanderers. In many ways, George and Lennies relationship is mirrored by that between Candy and his dog. Again, Candy is able to gain true loyalty and trust only from a dog-a one-dimensional, vulnerable being. When the thick-skinned Carlson asks, He aint no good to you Whynt you shoot him Candy? the only answer Candy can produce is that he had him so long. Over the years, Candy has developed a special bond of care, as opposed to simple utility, with his dog. To Carlson, who can only understand the value of a person in terms of their practical usefulness, due to his experience of the Great Depression, this bond is meaningless. After his dog is shot, Candy is reduced to a useless old cripple, also encapsulated in solitude. The dogs companionship had allowed Candy to cherish his past and be hopeful for his future, but now he has nothing to look forward to: When they can me here I wisht somebodyd shoot me I wont have no place to go an I cant get no more jobs. The dream farm tempts Candy, too, because he feels that owning a place will prevent him from becoming a lonely monument for passing ranch-hands to observe. His desperation for the farm is so intense that even after Lennies death he hopes George may work towards it, but to no avail-Candy too is destined to be alone, unknown and uncared for once he can no longer serve a practical purpose.

Nineteenth Century Views on Charity as Depicted in Charlotte Bronteââ¬â¢s Life and Novel, Jane Eyre :: Bronte
Nineteenth Century Views on Charity as Depicted in Charlotte Bronteââ¬â¢s Life and Novel, Jane Eyre In the nineteenth century, the role of charity was portrayed differently by many individuals depending on what religion they followed. On one hand, many people felt obligated to help the unfortunate to comply with religious responsibility and to become better individuals. On the other hand, Others, felt that the misfortunes of the poor werenââ¬â¢t their responsibility. The different concepts of charity can be viewed in Charlotte Bronteââ¬â¢s novel Jane Eyre, as she reveals to us the various experiences Jane underwent as an orphan. Many of the instances that Bronte mentions in her novel are references to some of the incidents she encountered in her school years. To know why charity was significantly one of Bronteââ¬â¢s main focuses in the novel, we will look at the conceptions that the Anglicans and other Christian groups had of charity in the nineteenth century, as well as a history of Bronteââ¬â¢s familial background. The Anglicans and other Christian groups viewed charity differently in the nineteenth century. Each religion had and preached its own concept. We learn that the Anglicansââ¬â¢ views are more in opposition to charity when Cheryl Walsh indicates that, "Through this type of religion, there was very little encouragement for the development of a social conscienceââ¬âof recognition of any kind of responsibility for the welfare of fellow human beings"(353). Walsh also mentions that Anglicans "Felt neither responsible for the suffering of the poor nor called on to help alleviate that suffering"(353). The belief of not being responsible for the misfortunes of the poor and not attempting to help them in any way draws the notion that Anglicans clearly didnââ¬â¢t favor charitable acts. On the other hand, according to St. Paul, Christianityââ¬â¢s view on charity was more an act of duty than the expected one of kindness. Christianity propagated charity as one of the necessary acts that a good Christian should follow. Graham Gordon believes that in Christianity, "Charity is considered chief of the Christian virtues," and that "Charity is commended by St. Paul for being the true way to the end which religious practices seek"(10). We can see that in being a chief virtue, charity is highly encouraged in the sense that helping others is considered to be a great deed of good doing. Therefore, we can draw the notion that those who wish to follow the "true way to the end," are those that contribute the most to the poor, as opposed to those mentioned by Walsh who see themselves as "not responsible for the welfare of human beings.

Management Power and Change Essay
1 Abstract The dynamics of power relations and their effects on organizational change was often underestimated by researchers. Analyses of the role played by power in organizational change are increasing in intensity, scale and impact (Munduate and Bennebroeck-Gravenhorst 2003). The appropriate and effective use of power is fundamental for managers engaged in major change processes. This report deals with the topic of management power and change. It focuses on the exercise of power and its function in organizational change. At first power and change management will be defined and then the bases or sources of power and the responses which are provoked according to the type of power being applied .how power can be used to influence and facilitate organizational change. 2 Definition of Power There are many variations to the definition of power and there are disagreements on its definition and what the best way is to measure it. The definition also depends on the context in which power is used. In this case, since the report focuses on the explanation of the use of power in the setting of organizational change, power is ââ¬Å"the potential ability to influence behavior, to change the course of events, to overcome resistance, and to get people to do things that they would not otherwise doâ⬠(Pfeffer, 1993: 204-5). 2.1 Power and Influence In trying to understand how change is achieved, social psychologists have used the concepts of social power and influence (Raven 1999) and therefore the terms power and influence are sometimes used synonymously, but there are discrepancies between them. Social power indicates the various tools a person has to influence the environment or the other party, while influence is referring to the actual use of a specific tool in a particular situation (Munduate and Medina 2009). According to French and Raven (1959) influence is a force one person (the leader or agent) exerts on someone else (follower or target) to induce a change in the latter, including changes in behaviors, attitudes, and values. Social power was subsequently defined as the potential ability of a person to influence someone else. ââ¬Å"Basically, influence is the effect a personââ¬â¢s actions have on the attitudes, values, beliefs, or behavior of others. Whereas power is the capacity to cause a change in a person, influence may be thought of as the degree of actual changeâ⬠(Daft, 2006: 679-680). Boddy defines influence as the process by which one party attempts to modify the behavior of others by mobilizing power resources. Hence, in order to apprehend the function of the change agent in the promotion of change in an organization, the reactions of the targets involving a proactive disposition toward change have to be considered first and then the available tools for the change agent to influence the targets (Munduate and Medina 2009). 2.3 Types of Influence Processes There are clear differences in the way followers comply to direct and indirect social pressure from a leader and actually being convinced by him. In one case the influence may just be sufficient to exercise control over the followersââ¬â¢ behavior, guaranteeing a public agreement no matter if the followers are privately convinced. In another case the influence could be so strong that it changes the followersââ¬â¢ opinion and merely makes him committed to the leaderââ¬â¢s request. Consequently, different types of influences have been proposed by social psychologists, whereby the most important was Kelmanââ¬â¢s distinction (1961) between compliance, internalization, and identification. 2.4 Bases of Power For a manager to be effective, he has to possess a source of power which he can use to influence employees to take actions or carry out orders which they would not have done in the absence of that power source.

World’s Reliance on Computers
Computers are used in many different ways; they are used in all sorts of different fields of work and are very important to many different people. Practically anything that you use is made by computers. Todayââ¬â¢s modern vehicles and airplanes were are designed on a computer. Our countryââ¬â¢s traffic signals are run by a network of computers. In a hospital, most lifesaving machines are run by computers. Space exploration would not have been possible without the help of computers. Most employers today require the use of computers. Most people in this 21st century would be lost if they didnââ¬â¢t have the computer. In the early 1800ââ¬â¢s with no computers, the medical field had no cures for life threatening diseases. But now in the 21st century most of the cures we have discovered were created with the aid of computers. Computers our found everywhere, in places such as pharmacies. Where without them they would have a hard time keeping inventory, and managing which medicin e goes to which patient. The votes for elections are counted, it may have been done by hand one day, but that makes them inaccurate and easily tampered with. But with the growing population and security risks it would be unmanageable without computers. As said previously space exploration would not be possible at all without the guidance of computer systems. You got to admit life would truly suck without computers. Many people do not agree at all and argue that we donââ¬â¢t need computers at all to live on. Well they could be right, but they sure do not know what would happen to the economy and the quality of life without them. At one point in time there were computers that were nowhere near as intricate like the ones we have learned to love today. Older computers were not as small as the ones we are used to having on our laps today. In fact the first computer ENIAC (electronic numerical integrator and computer), weighed 30 short tons, was roughly 8 feet by 3 feet by 100 feet, took up 1800 square feet (size of a modern apartment), and consumed 150 kW of power. Now compare that to your Apple MacBook Air. ***Computers changed the world a lot. It helped man step forward into the future. Thanks to computers, space exploration came true, new designs of vehicles and other transportation were made, entertainment became more entertaining, medical science made more cures for diseases, etc. . . The computers impacted our lives in many ways. You may not notice it but they did make life a lot easier. Without computers, the world would be a harder place to live in. Thanks to the computers, everyday life is easier for us. Some people may disagree but most wouldn't. Some people say that computers are taking away man power. That may be true but computers did make the impossible possible. *** In this modern age, most businesses today depend on computers and its comparable equipment. Computers have been the key tool to build a successful business.Business computer users have m any different uses for the computers, such as keeping a database on inventory, or managing client accounts, keeping track of money, and so much more. Laptops are another type of computer which is portable, and can be used anywhere. Many business user like laptops because the allow them to do work while on an airplane, or a train. Business users tend to use applications like Microsoft Office Suite where they can make slideshows with pie-charts and graphs to present information to other people in meetings. Any of the new movies you watch are made with special effects. These special effects are made on the computer; in fact most of the graphics you see have all been enhanced on a computer as well. To the left is a picture from the movie ââ¬Å"Avatar. â⬠Avatar was created by specially made suits attached to computers which then turned movement into animation, and then used high tech texturing and graphics to create these creatures. This wasn't the only movie made with computers. M ovies like Lord of the Rings, Titanic, Fight Club, Star Wars, and many more used computers to make them seem more stimulating and accurate. There are movies that have been entirely made on computers such as Finding Nemo and Despicable Me. Now computers are not only used in motion picture graphics they are even used to create the video games we all love to play. In facts the game console you play your video games on are considered mini computers such as PlayStation, Xbox, and Wii. Without computers you would never experience what it feels like to play Halo! Schools all over the country are starting to need more money to invest in their computer systems.Computers are starting to play a huge role in the education field. They help students create magnificent essays such as this one. Make PowerPoint presentations for their school projects. They can easily find the information they need on the thousands of different databases there are on the internet. Most high schools and colleges are re quiring that you type all of your essays and reports. Teachers also benefit from the use of computers as well. They can use the computer to do attendance, manage grades, and communicate with student outside of class time.Medical technology is the most important use of computers. Computers have helped save countless numbers of lives in the hospitals. All of the hospitals newer equipment is all running on a computer. Right now majority of the computers in the hospital help the hospital keep track of patient data, and they make sure the patient doesnââ¬â¢t have a balance! Scientists use computers to find cures for diseases that need cures like cancer and Alzheimerââ¬â¢s. Some of the cures we have found today would not have been possible without computers. It is astonishing how computers have changed the way we live. Something simple such as purchasing fare for the metro lines needs a computer. Tokens are no longer used today. As a replacement for tokens we now use metro cards. The metro cards store data that made by a computer. Also, online shopping has been very effective in previous few years. For the people who donââ¬â¢t have the time to shop in a store this them to just shop online. It also provides ease around the holiday season when the stores are mobbed. The internet has opened so many doors for the world.Computers are not only a luxury anymore they are now a necessity for businesses, homes, and schools. They have become learning devices, great information organizers for businesses. They have made communication instant. Without computers, we as a nation would not be move forward as fast as we are! If all of the computers in the world were to stop working, we would all be in big trouble. If you think that our society is prepared for a world with no computers, well, Godspeed. The fact is our world would be at a halt and mass chaos would arise. A world without computers, well, itââ¬â¢s unimaginable!

Saving Private Ryan Essays - English-language Films, War Epic Films
Saving Private Ryan Essays - English-language Films, War Epic Films Saving Private Ryan Saving Private Ryan is a movie that generates strong responses from most people that see it. While interviewing four individuals and reading three movie reviews, I found that each of my subjects would recommend it, not one of the individuals interviewed felt the violence was senseless, and all of them left the movie with a strong emotional response of some kind. It appears that Saving Private Ryan is the kind of movie to which many can relate. Saving Private Ryan is not a romantic, feel-good movie, but it is probably one of the best movies released this year. It is without a doubt one of the most realistic films produced. Each person that I spoke with, and all three of the internet criticisms that I read voiced positive opinions about this movie. It has different types of entertainment for all kinds of viewers. It has elements of violence, patriotism, sentimentality, and heroism all rolled into one film. All of my subjects, including the internet critics, feel that Saving Private Ryan will receive many awards, and that it is a credit to Steven Spielberg as a director. When asked if they would recommend the film to another each of my interviewees responded positively. One widely talked about part of this film is the huge degree of violence. In this case however, contrary to the usual attitudes, the violence is not described as senseless or excessive by anyone that I spoke with. This movie is obviously set against the backdrop of World War II, beginning with D-Day and the battle of Omaha Beach. The killing appears to be overdone as the young men step off the transport boats only to be killed one after the other, but when consulting the history of this battle, it is almost exactly how this battle took place. The beaches were indeed covered with bodies, and the water was red with the blood of the slaughtered soldiers. The recreation of this battle by Steven Spielberg has succeeded in bringing this war, this battle in particular, out of the history books and into larger than life color on Americas movie screens. Everyone I interviewed already knew of the terrible acts of the Germans during World War II, but hey had not, however, ever really been able to comprehend the degree of loss that many families experienced. They had also never really been able to picture the battles of the soldiers themselves in quite the detail that Saving Private Ryan provided them with. This is one movie that should not be negatively reviewed because of the degree of violence. Saving Private Ryan is about a horrible war, that took place because of a madmans craziness, and this war was an ugly thing that happened very much like this movie portrayed it. The continuous gore is difficult to watch at times, but leaves the viewer with a greater appreciation of their nations military, and the sacrifice of the soldiers who serve willingly. It is clear that above all else, Private Ryan is intended to create an awareness of the sacrifice of the soldiers that gave their lives during World War II. In doing that, Steven Spielberg very successfully in brings out intense emotions in the spectator. While this movie had a great deal of violence that was sometimes difficult to watch, the sheer sentimentality behind the mission of the soldiers who have to find Private Ryan and bring him back was heart wrenching to say the least. It would take a cold-hearted individual indeed to feel no sorrow for the pain of the mother of Private Ryan when the military officials arrive at her home to tell her that three of her sons have been killed in battle. The way she falls to her knees on the porch and begins sobbing at the sight of the military vehicle is without a doubt a mirror of any mothers reaction to the same situation. Simply said, the moviegoer feels her pain. Even the hard-core attitude of the soldiers during the capture of the Germ an soldier that has just shot their friend, the medic, brings on conflicting emotions. The German, while digging graves for the dead American soldiers, pleads for his life, insults Hitler, and

Definition and Examples of Expeditio in Rhetoric
Definition and Examples of Expeditio in Rhetoric Definition In an argument, the rhetorical term expeditio refers to the rejection of all but one of various alternatives. Also known as elimination,à the argument from residuals, the method of residues, and (in George Puttenhams phrase) the speedy dispatcher. An orator or persuader or pleader should go roundly to work, says George Puttenham, and by a quick and swift argumentà dispatch his persuasion, and, as they are wont to say, not to stand all day trifling to no purpose, but to rid it out of the way quickly (The Arte of English Poesie,à 1589). See Examples and Observations below. Also see: ArgumentationEnumeratioListingLogos Examples and Observations Elimination (or expeditio) occurs when we have enumerated the several ways in which something could have been brought about, and all are then discarded except the one on which we are insisting. (Caplan: Cicero, Quintilian, and Aristotle all regard this as a form of argument, not a figure. It is known in modern argumentation as the Method of Residues.)(James J. Murphy, Rhetoric in the Middle Ages: A History of Rhetorical Theory From Saint Augustine to the Renaissance. Universityà of California Press, 1974)Expeditio is when the speaker enumerates the reasons which may serve to prove something either possible or impossible, and after setting aside all the others, selects that reason which is valid and conclusive. It is frequently used in partitions.(George Winfred Hervey, A System of Christian Rhetoric. Harper, 1873) Richard Nixons Expeditio[M]uch more powerful in argument is expeditio, the device of setting out numbered options and then eliminating all but the one preferred . . .. [R ichard] Nixon uses this elimination logic in his speech justifying military combat in Cambodia, 1970: Now confronted with this situation [supplies coming from Cambodia], we have three options. First we can do nothing. . . . Our second choice is to provide massive military assistance to Cambodia itself. . . . Our third choice is to go to the heart of the trouble (Windt 1983, 138). Almost always, the final option is the preferred option.(Jeanne Fahnestock, Rhetorical Style: The Uses of Language in Persuasion. Oxford University Press, 2011) Anselm of Canterburys Expeditio: The Origin of Created ThingsMedieval scholastic theologians also attempted to prove creation ex nihilo by means of reason without any appeal to Scripture. An example of this was Anselms rational argument in his Monologion. He raised the question of the origin of created things. Logically, Anselm offered three possible answers: If . . . the totality of things visible and invisible is out of some material, it can only be . . . out of either the supreme nature, or out of itself, or out of some third essence. He quickly dismissed the third option because there just is no third essence. By process of elimination, this left two possibilities. He further dismissed the possibility that matter is from itself, reasoning: Again, everything that is out of matter is out of something other than itself and is posterior to [after] it. But because nothing is other than itself, or posterior to itself, it follows, therefore, that nothing is out of itself as material. B y process of elimination, this left only one option: The totality of things must exist out of the supreme nature.(Gregg R. Allison, Historical Theology: An Introduction to Christian Doctrine. Zondervan, 2011) Jimmie Dales ExpeditioTight-lipped, Jimmie Dale stared out at the black, flying walls as the subway train roared its way back to lower New York. He had been properly done! There could be no question about that. But by whom? And why? What did it mean? Intuition, even back there in The White Rat, had warned him that something was wrong, but he would in no way have been justified in being swayed wholly by intuition. He could not in justice blame himself for that. What was it? What was the meaning of it? Something had happened somewherebut not at The White Rat. And he had been very neatly side-tracked. All that was obvious. Was it Mother Margot? He shook his head. She had never yet double-crossed him, and he did not believe that she would dare to do so. Even her visit to the Sanctuary tonight, and her very evident wholesome respect for the Gray Seal, not to say fear, was almost proof in itself, it would seem, that she had not deliberately tried to mislead him. What, then? There seemed to be only one logical explanation left. The Phantom. It would not have been altogether a new move on the Phantoms part, for, while not wholly analogous, the man had in a way tried the same game before. The Phantom knew only too well, and to his cost, that there had been a leak somewhere in his entourage, a leak that had brought the Gray Seal very inopportunely on his heels more than once.(Frank L. Packard, Jimmie Dale and the Phantom Clue, 1922)

Company strategy Article Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Company strategy - Article Example ially developed a business strategy in which, it allowed only a little space to broadband technology but then it was planned that the company is going to be a potential provider of broadband.
